The wonderful world of Lollapalooza will once again dominate the dreams of music fans across the land. Today’s schedule announcement, as most assumed, didn’t disappoint. From bottom to top, for a change, we’re talking about Sharon Van Etten, Metric, DIE ANTWOORD, Madeon, Band of Skulls, Passion Pit, M83, Black Sabbath, Bassnectar, The Shins and The Black Keys on Friday August 3rd; we’re talking about Fun., Neon Indian, The Weeknd, Franz Ferdinand, B.O.B., Avicii, Frank Ocean, Bloc Party, Santigold and the Red Hot Chili Peppers on Saturday, August 4th; and finally, Sunday will be held down by Sigur Rós, The Sheepdogs, Florence + The Machine, Zeds Dead, Miike Snow, Justice, Childish Gambino and Jack White. The only sad part about it all (yes, there is possible sadness in a lineup like that) is that so many of the acts play simultaneously. So you can’t see Justice and Jack White, nor Frank Ocean and Santigold. Bummer. Full schedule here.
The Shins have re-entered the music video game with some flash and some shine. For their new animated clip for The Rifle’s Spiral, the first cut of their forthcoming record Port of Morrow, the band went with director Jamie Caliri, who truly worked a little magic. Reminiscent of Tim Burton’s The Nightmare Before Christmas, the clip features a trio of evil businessmen, a good magician, and a rabbit caught in between. The visual is intriguing and the story line kind of creepy. The Shins actually premiered the video in 3D on the Nintendo 3DS, but for those of us still stuck in the Nintendo 64 generation, the clip is up on the NOWNESS right now.
Quick! They were featured on the SpongeBob SquarePants movie soundtrack, aired at Heath Ledger’s funeral and took a right turn at Albuquerque! NAME THAT BAND! No? Not sure? How about a clue? They’ve just put out an album on the Aural Apothecary label under Columbia Records, called Port of Morrow. Anyone? Anyone? Now based in Portland, Oregon, and are currently on tour, dames and gents, give it up for The Shins! (more…)

I’m not going to lie to you… Bonnaroo looks good this year. Not that you were expecting any less, but on top of all the current chart toppers and festival mainstays, The Beach Boys will be playing Bonnaroo in 2012. The Beach Boys, like the old guys who wear Hawaiian shirts and sing Surfin’ USA. Not your thing? Okay, well how about Radiohead, Bon Iver, The Shins of the Black Lips? Still not convinced? What about tUnE-yArDs, St. Vincent, Danny Brown, Flying Lotus or Das Racist? No? Do Feist, Major Lazer, Black Star, The Roots, Yelawolf or The Joy Formidable tickle your fancy? Yeah, don’t lie, one of these bands has you excited. And if not, well there’s still Aziz-freaking-Ansari. Bonnaroo 2012 is going down June 7-10th in Manchester, Tennessee. All the details can be found on the festival website. And if you really aren’t that familiar with the above-mentioned talent, organizers have put together an 81-track Spotify playlist with which you can get acquainted.
Living in Montreal, or any part of Canada really, the yearly announcement of Coachella’s line-up is usually a painful experience; painful because the reality is so few of us have the means to make our way down there and live the ridiculous festival and its six days of madness. This year, the line-up feels especially painful. Headliners include The Black Keys, Radiohead, Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg. Other acts include Bon Iver, The Shins, David Guetta, Arctic Monkeys, La Roux, Beirut, The Weeknd, Justice, Florence and The Machine, Explosions in the Sky, M83, Cat Power, Swedish House Mafia, Miike Snow, Jeff Magnum, Frank Ocean… yeah, you get the idea. Lots of bands you’d love to see, all clumped into Indio California for six days of magic that you most likely won’t see. IF you want to put yourself through a little more torture, the full list is available here. For the first time in 2012, Coachella will be taking place over two weekends, April 13th-15th and April 20th-22nd.

Tired of not being able to wig out with Rock Band to the jams of your choice? Well, here’s some interesting news for you: the game’s makers, Harmonix Music Systems, have announced that users – and that means any band or artist – are set to be allowed to upload their own songs for use on the game. Songs are also to be made available for sale to other users via the Network Store. Readers may understandably not be that excited to hear that both Creed and Evanescence have been quick to sign up for this service, although in somewhat better news, Seattle stalwarts Sub Pop have also prepared a selection of their catalog – whose recent alumni include The Shins and Flight of the Conchords – for upload into the game.

We all know that rock ‘n’ roll is a dream of many men and we also know that a way to a man’s heart is through his stomach. So is it really any surprise that both The Shins‘ drummer Jesse Sandoval and Against Me!‘s beat keeper Warren Oakes have both set aside their rock ‘n’ roll lifestyles to deliver food to the starving masses?… Mexican food to be exact. While Sandoval is serving authentic Mexican cuisine from a street cart in Portland, Oakes is handing out burritos in Gainesville. Would you like a side of autograph with that Enchilada? Perhaps for those of us who aren’t in musical outfits, it is living proof that what we think would be a dream come true may actually turn out to be less than the fantasy can uphold. If you’ve spent the last 10 years of your life trying to ‘make it’ then maybe you should ‘make’ yourself a sandwich.
