Lead singer of Glasgow art-rockers Franz Ferdinand and noted foodie Alex Kapranos has lashed out at Sony/Epic, the label that releases their records in the US, over the licensing of one of the band’s tracks for a McDonald’s television ad. For British artists, the television advertisement tie-in has in the past played key a part in breaking the States – take, for example, Coldplay’s Yellow, and Nick Drake’s Pink Moon – still, the Scottish rockers already enjoy excellent popularity in North America, and were certainly not amused with Kapranos posting via Twitter, “Dirty bastards (referring to Sony/Epic) Stupid arrogant motherfucking pig-brained arseholes. I’d rather eat a cow-pat on a bun than a bloody McDonald’s.” He expressed disappointment at the label’s decision, although said he was “not really surprised,” musing that the incident formed the perfect “example of how a band falls out with its US label.” We’ll have to wait and see what happens with this one, but one imagines a lot of transatlantic groveling happening in the very near future.
Oscar winning French actress Marion Cotillard has teamed up with Scottish dance-punk dandies Franz Ferdinand to record the vocals for a song entitled, The Eyes of Mars. The collaboration is in aid of the French fashion house Dior – of which Cotillard was last year made the face of the new line, and a video of her performing the song, in which she plays “a working woman who transforms herself into a sultry singer at night” is due to appear as part of an accompanying television ad. The song can be streamed on Lady Dior’s website.
2009 boasted a roster of solid releases certainly fit for lists abroad, however only ten could make our final weighty scroll of well to do records. Scroll down and witness what cornershopstudios felt were the Top Ten CDs of the year… if you dare.

The Fran Healy and Andy Dunlop concert at Cabaret du Musée Juste Pour Rire was an intimately personal gig with anecdotal stories explaining the origins of their band’s (Travis) songs and music career, pre- and post-success. A relaxed and jovial mood was immediately established the instant Healy and Dunlop walked on stage wearing absurd wigs and tacky outfits honoring Halloween. (more…)

Today marks the culminating end of long time British rock act Oasis. Following a backstage altercation between brothers Liam and Noel Gallagher the two decided to cancel their appearance at the Rock en Seine festival in Paris after “Liam smashed Noel’s guitar” claimed Amy MacDonald on her Twitter page, a Scottish singer who was present when the boys had it out. “It’s with some sadness and great relief to tell you that I quit Oasis tonight,” announced Noel on the band’s website. “People will write and say what they like, but I simply could not go on working with Liam a day longer.” And with those words the Wonder Wall has come crashing down.

Don’t mess with a good thing; illustrious words to live by, and in the case of Franz Ferdinand illustrious they are. The Scottish foursome have found a perfect mix of stiff UK disco rock and funky pulse grooves that pack a dance floor, and with their latest release Tonight, they’ve kept a very familiar recipe.
