EARTHLESS @ Les Saints – 02.21.09

The heavy waves of music penetrate your ears while disturbing and soothing the soul with promises of louder times and instances of pure unbridled expression. Bright lights force you to squint and the sweat gathered on your brow stings your vision as the San Diego trio assaults the room with peeling guitar, ferocious drums and a bass sound in competition with the depths of the devil’s moan. Your ears deaden as the band goes on a homicidal quest of search and destroy for your hearing, while your head bangs in perfect sync with the masterful cosmic psych rock that flows from the stage, and drips from the fingers of guitarist Isaiah Mitchell. Floating through an experience of dark empty corners with rounded edges, the set unfolds like meteor dust on your windshield forcing you to pull over and take notice. Mouth agape and eyes as dry as the surface of the arid moon, your Saturday night is rendered cosmic. The attack ends with a sincere “thank you Montreal”, and on weak knees you go about your night, feeling enlightened and complete, yet detached from this existence, removed from what was; EARTHLESS. Winter Gloves @ Les Saints – 02.13.09

Down the long busy street passed pizza joints, bars and blank stares. The cold air attacks your face and the clamour of cars and people circle your head. The winter cold crawls through your coat and your knuckles tighten with every gust of wind, as a vision of gloves resting warmly on your bed makes you involuntarily clench your fists. One more block you think, seeing the digital marquis scrolling in the distance, your feet move on their own pulling you to the venue. A Frogger induced street crossing brings you to the mouth of the action; through the door and down the stairs you make your way to the main room where an excited crowd has gathered. Weaving your way toward the stage, you can see the Montreal foursome twitch with impending release. A drum sound from the belly of rock & roll resonates from the stage, layered with slick keys, grimy synth and a bass sound that shakes ideas loose. Your hands clap but still find the time to unzip your coat and the smile on your face makes the music massage your ears. With a sea of hands clapping in time, the room pounds with the heartbeat of a party and you turn to a friend mouthing the words “what a night”. Your hands warm up and the thick layer of heat on the ceiling tickles your finger tips as you reach for the sky begging for more. The visions were right… all you needed were some Winter Gloves. 1. Airbourne @ Les Saints – 04.03.08

Runnin’ wild through a city near you, these boys bring chops to the stage that’ll leave your ears ringing and your eyes bleeding, at the headlining spot for 2008, Airbourne.

2. Drive-By truckers @ Cabaret du Musée Juste Pour Rire – 03.20.08

Just enough South to fill the room with a twang and more than enough rock to bring the crowd to its knees, Drive-By Truckers walk the walk at number two.

3. Anti-Flag @ Club Soda – 09.13.08
