Bits & Pieces, Concert Reviews

cornershopstudios’ Top Ten Concerts of 2009

01.01.10

With the plethora of live shows that constantly swirl through our lives, it may seem a daunting task to choose but some of the best… and it is. But we buckled down and pulled out the Top Ten shows that made our ears ring, toes tap and bodies move. Curious? Yeah you are…

1. The Lemonheads @ Maison des arts de Laval – 07.03.09

The Lemonheads

In a music lover’s lifetime they hope for an opportunity to witness rock ‘n’ roll in it’s truest form. Many forget that pain and a series of missteps usually define the true form of expression through music. The Lemonheads reminded us of the elegantly wasted glow of grunge and thusly stand at this year’s number one spot for best show of 2009.

2. The Dead Weather @ Ottawa Bluesfest – 07.19.09

The Dead Weather

As a shining member of modern rock’s royal family, Jack White assembled a band of audio heavyweights the likes of which devour a stage armed with what can only be defined as an intrinsic ability to perform. The Dead Weather stand tall as they grab the number two spot for a performance that still has Ottawa ringing.

3. Mastodon @ Le National – 05.04.09

Mastodon

The seething crowd moved in calculated time with the gargantuan tsunami of distorted fantasy as Mastodon disrupted Le National’s chi to take a commanding hold at number three.

4. Dan Auerbach @ Le National – 11.08.09

Dan Auerbach

A whirl wind of blues soaked folk stomped it’s mischievously clever eccentricities through Montreal as Dan Auerbach aptly climbed his way to number four.

5. The Mars Volta @ Metropolis – 10.05.09

The Mars Volta

“Never heard a man speak like this man before, Never heard a man speak like this man before, All the days of my life ever since I’ve been born, Never heard a man speak like this man before, Watch me now.” At number five The Mars Volta.

6. Matthew Good @ Metropolis – 12.10.09

Matthew Good

Showing that quality is forever and true creative prowess is as important on stage as it is in the studio, Matthew Good roars at number six.

7. Busta Rhymes @ Metropolis – 08.20.09

Busta Rhymes

Late as usual, the seasoned duke of dictation arrived before a crowd of anticipatory glares. And folks… waiting an hour and a half for the explosive energy and groomed talent that is Busta Rhymes is truly a small price to pay. A detonating performance at Metropolis puts this hip hop aristocrat at number seven.

8. Band of Skulls @ Club Lambi – 06.15.09

Band of Skulls

A quaint Club Lambi witnessed the ravenous blues infused rock subtlety of an electrifying threesome as our number eight spot quickly opened up for Band of Skulls.

9. Metric @ Metropolis – 10.16.09

Metric

Metric serenaded their loyal throng with a live performance fit for kings, as an inevitable spot on cornershopstudios top ten list was born. For that reason the indie rockers from the great white north find themselves at number nine.

10. Jedi Mind Tricks @ Théâtre Telus – 09.06.09

Jedi Mind Tricks

The force was strong with this one as the lyrical assassins rocked an eager crowd using monstrous beats and rock solid rhymes. Jedi Mind Tricks is the big number ten on this year’s list.
