The makers of World of Warcraft, Activision Blizzard, are being sued by a guy named Erik Estavillo. The San Jose gamer claims that the game’s monthly fees are too high, and that the game wastes players time by making them walk places, among other charges. On top of these grievances, Estavillo claims that the game exacerbates his sense of alienation. If this madness wasn’t enough, Estavillo is subpoenaing Depeche Mode’s Martin Gore, as an expert in alienation! To hear Estavillo tell it Gore is a perfect candidate “since he himself has been known to be sad, lonely, and alienated, as can be seen in the songs he writes.” In what might just be an effort to meet the celebrities he admires, Estavillo has also subpoenaed Winona Ryder, whose love for the book The Catcher in the Rye allegedly gives her insight into “how alienation in the book can tie to alienation in real live [sic] / video games such as World of Warcraft.” I’m thinking that this lonely man might try to get some more musicians on the stand. I hear that Will Ferrell likes The Confederacy of Dunces… just a thought Erik.
