Proving once again that Montreal is a hot bed for indie music, Silver Starling are quickly becoming the talk of the town. Formed by recording engineer Marcus Paquin, the five-piece is well at home at Last Gang Records with fellow Canadians Metric, Mother Mother and The New Pornographers. Paquin, who plays leading man to Liam O’Neill, Marika Anthony-Shaw, Peter X and Gab Lambert, is not afraid to share his emotions, and this authentic sensitivity is felt throughout their eponymous first work. Some of the subject matter is quite personal, as he explores the full gamut of feelings brought on by the passing of a friend who lost the battle to pancreatic cancer. Nowhere is this passionate introspective and reflective account more apparent than on The News where he states, “There’s a battle in my head, But I’m not a soldier” in a hauntingly genuine delivery.
