Court Bars Wilson and Gaugh from Using Band Name ‘Sublime’

11.04.09

Eric Wilson and Bud Gaugh, former band-mates of the late Bradley Nowell, have been restricted by a California judge from playing under the name ‘Sublime’. Following Nowell’s death in 1996, Wilson and Gaugh continued working together as the Long Beach Dub All Stars. Recently the pair added singer Rome to the lineup, and broke out ‘Sublime’ once again. Prior to the SmokeOut Festival, at which Wilson, Gaugh, and Rome introduced themselves as ‘Sublime‘, the group won the right to use the band name. Fans were told through the group’s website “we are pleased that the United States District Court has allowed us to perform as Sublime for all of our fans.” Now another judge is telling them otherwise. Instructed to seek a business solution with Nowell’s estate, Wilson and Gaugh issued a statement following the ruling that forbids them from taking the stage (or selling merch) using the ‘Sublime‘ name: “Our goal continues to be sharing the music and message of Sublime with all of our fans around the world. We intend to take the court’s advice and work on a business solution to this issue. We hope the Estate follows suit so the music of Sublime can live on and be accessible to everyone.”
