Charging out of the gate with their fifth studio album, Atreyu surprises the pants off nay sayers and grabs hold of their established loyal following with Congregation of the Damned. An album littered with giant licks, mature song structure and a willingness to venture off into the unknown.“I’m not a big Atreyu fan”, she said. “They just don’t do anything for me”, he said. Sound like one of you? I’d point but a digital finger would be cold and inappropriate. Most folks stand on half way ground regarding Atreyu, which may be the precise reason to listen to Congregation of the Damned ASAP. The album, although very Atreyu-esque, borrows from a more creative metal ideal, delivering untouchable patterns and blazing dual guitar work. Stop! Before its Too Late and We’ve Destroyed It All, kicks open the door and stars as en eye opening first piece, complete with bark and bite. The album’s title track has a two-step canter smothered in tearing rock chords and a slick fullness, but tends to lie weak and penniless vocally. The metalcore specialists even explore unchartered territory as You Were The King, Now You’re Unconscious incorporates an electro tribal feel that bursts into driving audible flames. With a conjured recipe for metal brutality, new wave guitar leads and striking creativity, Atreyu scores solid points for Congregation of the Damned.
