Rufus Wainwright Writes His First Opera

Baroque Canadian pop artist Rufus Wainwright has decided to try his hand in the world of opera, describing his debut French written and performed piece Prima Donna saying “It’s about an older opera singer who is deciding whether to continue her career or not”. Wainwright also comments on the exhausting process of creating such an elaborate piece of work commenting, “It’s never easy. No matter how trained or how knowledgeable or fit you are, it’s always gonna take every little ounce of your being to do. And there’s no easy way around it. But that’s the point of opera it’s a full body experience.” The premiere of Prima Donna takes place July 10th 2009 at Manchester’s Palace Theatre and runs till the 19th.
