Name your band after a skateboard trick, march to the beat of energy ridden punk rock and a band like Millencolin you are sure to become. Celebrating the tenth anniversary of their y2k effort Pennybridge Pioneers, the Swedish skate punk quartet took the opportunity to rock Montreal’s Club Soda right off the edge! The room heaved with the as per usual nostalgic tenth grade skate snarl that most Millencolin fans have branded in their minds. It’s been ten years since the boys’ from the land of IKEA unleashed Pennybridge Pioneers and this wonderful three chorded evening decadently boasted the album in it’s full effect. “This is fuckin’ sick”, announced a fervent fan to my left, “if they play Material Boy I’ll just shit”, he continued. Is it wrong that those few words quite fittingly sum up the night? One quickly learns that there are no part-time Millencolin fans. If you’re with them now, you’ve been with them since the beginning and will see it through till the bitter end. We stood and bobbed as track after track came hurling from the stage like audio filled paint balls on crack; splashing a finely tuned energy across joy filled faces. No Cigar, Duckpond, Hellman and Devil Me all rang with the same intensity as they did just a decade ago. Full figured, articulate skate punk ditties deep fried and smothered in humble gravy and topped with bits of salty sneers and jeers. Oh and just in case you were concerned, the gentleman to my left did not shit his pants upon hearing Material Boy. Although you have to admit that would have screamed commitment. Heads up! The Swedes are coming!! The Swedes are coming!!!
