Porcupine Tree @ Salle Wilfrid-Pelletier – 05.07.10

05.13.10
Porcupine Tree

Nice to see you visiting cornershopstudios. I’ll be your waiter, and our menu for this evening is perfectly aged prog-rock foliage, servings of mind bending imagery, retina raping waves of meticulous light, and a Salle Wilfrid-Pelletier crowd armed with a strong aversion to silence. You’re also in for a treat as tonight’s chef will be Porcupine Tree. Masterful swells of constructive sound bled across the crowd’s content faces as frontman Steven Wilson took barefoot stance through epic chords and seasoned words. Referencing the seated affair, Wilson commented “This is a wonderful venue, but can someone tell me what the problem is?”, subsequently inviting the crowd to leave their seats and approach the stage for the second set. Brandishing efforts old and new, the English quintet delighted Montreal’s audio heads with cheerleaders like The Incident, Great Expectations, Stars Die and Normal Play; all the while nostalgic visions of mind expanding acid trips and tragically blown speakers rattled through the attendees’ heads. Live guitarist John Wesley mangled peeling riffs, while engorged drums and bass were handled by Gavin Harrison and Colin Edwin; rumbling through the room on fuller proclamations and warming the air during lighter storms. A notable attraction of the night was also key master Richard Barbieri, not only tickling keys to grinning climax, but formulating processed wallops of audio swells. Ending the night on the epic notes of Blackest Eyes and Trains, these proggers from across the pond left Montreal as heroes. Doing it loud, proud and progressive since 1987… Porcupine Tree.
