With playful la-la-las, Dum Dum Girls led by Dee-Dee, put out a dang good full-length album debut with I Will Be. The lo-fi indie outfit is a throwback to the sounds of the sixties girl groups, singing eleven terse tunes with an unrefined take on life and the road map of love. Produced by Dee-Dee and Richard Gottehrer (Blondie, The Go-Go’s), fans of The Raveonettes will appreciate the ease of this album listen. The echoing phrasing of vocals, the mid-tempo candor and the unfussiness of lyrics are characteristic of the DDG’s tracklist. In Baby Don’t Go, the girl smoothly pleads for you to stay, somehow in a non-urgent sort of way. Blank Girl boasts a noteworthy mid-tempo boy & girl duet; “You’ve become a new creation, I don’t want to miss out on.” And a twisted delight rings out in Bhang, Bhang, I’m A Burnout, where you can certainly identify with the moment Dum Dum Girls describe as ‘dead in the head’; yes, you too are used up physically and mentally at times. Despite the lyrical complaint of exhaustion and the plague of a few nightmares, the album is good-natured, quick and effective in its delivery (under thirty minutes to be exact), and temperate to the ear. Summary: short & sweet, Dum Dum Girls have launched a solid foundation.
