You know when you’ve had an embarrassing moment, and it’s not one of those things you can laugh about? Pretty much trounces any self-confidence you had at said moment t minus 1?! Well that’s when you throw on Hot Chip’s One Life Stand. I can’t say it’s a quick fix to a brazen improved you, but it can certainly get the head nodding for a couple of mid-tempo sparkles, if not boost the ego if you strain your ears for the constructive verse, “Nothing is wasted, Life is worth living”. So yeah, maybe tomorrow you can stick it to the man. The British electro pop outfit’s fourth album flickers a leisure swagger compared to their previous installments, but there’s room for the laser beams as Alexis or Joe chuck their song at you. Think early house. Think disco. Think I Feel Better. And your newfound strut will hopefully forget the mishaps of the day (or night), or maybe you’ll actually chuckle about it under your breath. I can’t say it’s Hot Chip brilliance, but all around and upside down, the adjectives inserted here should be: blithe, resilient, and tickling. Like the guy says in the opening track, “Happiness is what we all want”. Thanks for the strong synth chords, the fierce beats (probably a bit in part fabricated on laptops), and the pulsating rattle of drum machines. Summing it up, albeit the five guys are good, they’re capable of more. I want THAT “To be found”.
