Alice Cooper @ Théâtre St-Denis – 10.15.08

Alice Cooper

60-year-old Vincent Damon Furnier, better known as Alice Cooper, got a rise out of the Montreal’s Théâtre St-Denis, delivering his flavor of gore, guts and ghoulishness to a packed crowd. As the music of their youth poured over them as freely as the beer flowed through them, the loyal fans of the shock rocker sang their throats raw in unbridled enjoyment to Dirty Diamonds and Welcome to My Nightmare. The stage was made up of a large drum riser with steps leading up to either side and of course everything was covered in spider webs and torn hanging material, oh, and there were dancers and ghouls and guns, oh my. Cooper also spent so much of the night throwing free stuff into the crowd it started to feel like we were at veteran rocker’s product toss. The crowd made away with a few magic wand canes, a walking crutch, piles and piles of fake pearl necklaces and more guitar picks than you can shake a stick. The atmosphere is full when watching an Alice Cooper concert. The guitars are blazing, the vocals are shrieking, the drums are thunderous, and during all of that there is freaky stuff constantly going on. By the time Cooper is assaulting a woman on stage, impregnating her, and then being strait jacketed for brutally murdering their bastard child, you’re hooked. Aged young and old this crowd was on fire, the great Alice could do no wrong and they could do no wrong in return. It’s plain to see that the anthem rock of the 70’s and 80’s is not much different from that of today. Great live spectacle, great live sound, lots of fist pumping and singing, and bad hair cuts as far as the eye can see.
